The 485-foot long Baltic Ace carrying 1,417 Mitsubishi vehicles collided with 439-foot Corvus J in North Sea, claiming five lives and another six still missing. While the Corvus J sustained damage, it won’t sink and the crew onboard is safe. But Baltic Ace on the other hand went under.
The tragedy occurred in busy lanes of North Sea off cost of Belgium and Netherlands. Three ships from Royal Dutch Sea Rescue Organisation along with coast guard aircrafts and helicopters managed rescue operations and were looking for survivors late in the evening.

Volkswagen launched a modified version of its small hatchback, Up! Dubbing it the Eco Up! In Europe yesterday. The modifications carried out on the Up! include the addition of two CNG tanks with a total capacity of 72-litres, long with a 10-litre reserve petrol tank for backup. The car is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine and according to VW, it will provide an astonishing mileage of 34.5kmpl.
Now, while there is no mention of the new Eco Up! coming to India, Volkswagen may want to consider that option. India may not be as technologically advanced in terms of the electric or hybrid car technology, but CNG based cars are potential sales chart toppers for a market such as ours.
The Eco Up! Engine, despite its coversion to CNG, can generate a healthy 67bhp along with a peak torque of 90Nm. The car is priced at Rs. 9.09 lakh in Germany.
Skoda has been seen releasing tantalizing images of the new Skoda Octavia. The Octavia Facebook recently released a cropped picture of the Octavia tail light showing off its new design; and now we have yet another release in the form of a cropped image of the chrome underlining the rear window. Skoda has revealed that they plan to reveal the 2013 Octavia in Prague before the end of this year.
We expect the Octavia to launch in India by the second half of the year 2013, most probably around the time of Diwali. Also in the bag is the possibility that the 2013 Octavia will be locally produced via the CKD route.
The new Octavia has been stuffed with a host of new features to earn its place in the premium sedan listings and comes with such options as driver fatigue detection, 3D graphics on LCD infotainment system, steering mounted controls and others. The 2013 Octavia will come housing both petrol and diesel engine options and has a 10.8cm longer wheelbase than the current model. The petrol version will house any of the 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre engine options depending on the variant while the diesel version will house a selection of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre engine options.
The Tata Nano is planning to make its debut in Jamaica this month. The distribution and operations there will be handled by Metis Motors, a local entity. Deliveries of the car will start from December 15 and the importer will start building up stock from February 2013. Only the top-end variant will be made available.
Two Nanos are already in Jamaica for marketing activities. Joe Ferreira, director of new markets at Metis Motors said, “A lot of people are sceptical, will always love bigger and better. I hear people complain it does not have a nose”. This stems from the preference of the Jamaican public, who like their cars big.
There are stickers on both the marketing Nanos that claim 26kmpl, making it the most fuel efficient car in Jamaica. The Nano will be available with a 25,000 km or two-year warranty, whichever comes first. The car will be sold for $940,000 JMD (Rs 5.59 lakhs). Finance options are also available from some institutions.
